A Chicago man was being held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bail following a hit-and-run crash outside U.S. Cellular Field that injured a city traffic aide before Sunday’s Cubs-White Sox game, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Modesto Delgado, 27, appeared for his bond hearing this afternoon before Cook County Judge Raymond Myles, charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of a personal-injury accident.
Delgado, of the 3100 block of South Normal Avenue, was also cited with several traffic offenses, including driving without a license, having no insurance, making an improper left turn, striking a pedestrian in the roadway and failure to obey police, Police Officer Amina Greer said.
The traffic aide, 36, was hit by the vehicle about 12:40 p.m. Sunday at 31st and LaSalle Streets, just north of the stadium. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Police used a witness’ description of the vehicle to find the driver, and police took Delgado into custody, said Kevin Smith, a spokesman for the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, which manages the city’s traffic aides.
Smith said the woman, who has been working as an aide for a year, suffered what appeared to be a serious arm injury and some abrasions.
If convicted, Delgado could face 1 to 3 years in prison, said state’s attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin. His next court date is scheduled for Monday.
Earlier this year, two city traffic aides died after being struck by while directing traffic.
