James Loney ‘s two-run homer in the ninth broke a scoreless tie as the Dodgers beat St. Louis 2-1. It was the first long ball given up by Adam Wainwright in seven starts covering 48 1/3 innings. L.A. was on the verge of being shut out for the fifth time in seven games.

Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain, a rocket-throwing righty who began the season at Class A, overwhelmed the Indians with four Ks in two perfect innings. New York captain Derek Jeter: “Joba throws a 100 m.p.h. off-speed pitch. That can’t be too much fun.”

The Indians honored Larry Doby as each player wore the Hall of Famer’s No. 14 to honor the 60th anniversary of him following Jackie Robinson over baseball’s color barrier. Pitcher C.C. Sabathia: “It’s awesome. Larry Doby deserves to be recognized for all that he did.”

THREE DOWN

Toronto right-hander Shaun Marcum left the field in hot, humid Kansas City because of apparent leg cramps after losing his bid for a no-hitter. Marcum, who was born in Kansas City, did not allow a hit until Billy Butler’s infield single up the middle with two outs in the seventh.

Billy Wagner barely got out of trouble in his last outing. Not this time. Hanley Ramirez hit a go-ahead two-run double off Wagner in the ninth inning and Florida rallied past the Mets 4-3. Wagner: “Just one of those nights.” He entered with a streak of 21 scoreless innings.

So much for those vaunted Red Sox relievers. The Orioles rallied from a 5-1 deficit with a four-run eighth against Eric Gagne, then handed Hideki Okajima his first major-league loss in the ninth. “I’m not doing my job right now,” said Gagne, who got only one out.
