Trying to decide where to hang your hat? RedEye offers a sampling of some Chicago neighborhoods and what you might expect to find there based on the area’s reputation.
Bronzeville
This historically black neighborhood is experiencing a revival as it tries to return to its artistic roots as a hub of jazz and blues. A burst of condo building has made it one of the city’s hot real estate markets. Easy street parking, as well as Green Line and expressway access.
Lincoln Park/Lakeview
Recent college graduates and new arrivals to Chicago pile into a plethora of studios near the lake, often willing to skimp on living space so they have more money to spend on bar-hopping and late-night meals at the Wiener Circle. Home to Boystown and Wrigleyville, it also is the choice stomping grounds for gay men and Cubs fans. Good access to Red and Brown Lines. Street parking takes patience.
Wicker Park/Bucktown
Intellectuals and artsier-than-thou hipsters who can afford the inflated cost of living in this bustling neighborhood share space with the stroller set. The bohemian vibe has diminished somewhat as young families move into the many condos being built and converted in the gentrified-but-still-cool neighborhood. Decent street parking, depending on the area, and expressway and Blue Line access.
Ukrainian Village/West Town
Hipsters with less cash to burn head to these still-gentrifying areas, where the Latino and Eastern European influences are still alive. Good street parking and expressway access. “L” stops are a hike.
Bridgeport/McKinley Park
This traditionally Irish and politically connected neighborhood, where Mayor Daley grew up, is home to U.S. Cellular Field and, therefore, lots of White Sox fans, though North Side hipster transplants in search of a good deal are moving in. Chinatown adds a strong Chinese influence. Good street parking, and expressway and Red Line access.
Uptown/Edgewater
Looking for more bang for their buck, North Siders priced out of Lincoln Park and Lakeview head farther north to these diverse neighborhoods that offer some of the best African and Vietnamese cuisine in town — plus affordable apartments right on the lake. Decent street parking and Red Line access.
Lincoln Square/Ravenswood
Residents in this historically German area have sought out a quieter environment and more living space for their dollar while still positioning themselves near the bustle of Lincoln Avenue. Easy street parking; Brown Line nearby.
Andersonville
This historically Swedish neighborhood prides itself on its quaint, independently owned businesses and is known to be a favorite among lesbians. Decent street parking, convenient access to the Red Line.
Gold Coast/River North
Arguably the ritziest neighborhoods in Chicago, they draw well-heeled residents who appreciate the nearby designer clothing shops and the see-and-be-seen nightclub scene. Convenient Red Line, Brown Line and expressway access. Finding street parking and avoiding tickets is a battle.
Pilsen
This largely Mexican neighborhood has become a hot place to live for artists and hipsters who can no longer afford Wicker Park. Easy street parking, and Pink Line and expressway access.
Hyde Park
The University of Chicago anchors this diverse, intellectual and tight-knit community. Decent street parking and good Metra access.
South Loop
Young professionals looking for an investment and renters looking for proximity to downtown are snapping up condos and apartments in the many high-rises being built in this up-and-coming ‘hood just south of the Loop. Easy expressway and Red, Green and Orange Line access. Try to park if you dare.
Rogers Park
This neighborhood — the most ethnically diverse in the city, according to Census data — is home to Loyola University. Indians, Pakistanis and Middle Easterners dominate the famous Devon Avenue business strip. Decent street parking and Red Line access.
Logan Square
Hipsters priced out of Wicker Park and Bucktown mingle with the Polish and Mexican communities that have traditionally lived here. Easy street parking, and expressway and Blue Line access.
Humboldt Park
A large and proud Puerto Rican community is starting to see new neighbors as Wicker Parkers looking for rent relief head west. Good street parking, and expressway and Blue Line access.
