The Phillies earned their 44th come-from-behind win with a 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Mets. Greg Dobbs’ sacrifice fly off Aaron Heilman drove in the go-ahead run as the Phillies pulled within a game of the wild-card-leading Padres, who played the Giants late Friday.
Indians third baseman Casey Blake hit a game-ending home run on former teammate David Riske’s first pitch in the bottom of the ninth in Cleveland’s 5-4 win over the Royals, capping a rally from a 4-1 deficit. Blake had not homered in 144 at-bats since Aug. 1.
The Orioles narrowly missed their second straight shutout in a 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays, but Brian Burres did his part by scattering eight hits over seven shutout innings. Burres threw 72 of his 105 pitches for strikes as he won for the first time since July 28.
THREE DOWN
Ben Sheets got lit up for four runs in the first inning as the Brewers lost 6-5 to the Reds to fall 1 1/2 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. The running game also bothered Sheets as the Reds stole five bases off him and battery mate Johnny Estrada.
Red Sox relievers Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon, the stalwarts of one of the best bullpens in baseball, imploded in the eighth against the Yankees, giving up six runs on six hits (including two homers) before recording an out, while wasting away a 7-2 lead …
Taking Yankees starter Andy Pettitte off the hook from a horrible loss. The veteran left-hander allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in just four innings of work. He threw 101 pitches with just 58 going for strikes.
