Flat-out fun
FruitaBu Smooshed organic fruit twirls from Stretch Island are sort of like eating taffy, but these snacks are made from fruit purees. They won’t replace whole fruit, but they’re perfect (and conveniently light) for toting in lunch bags for a healthful snack. Flavors include strawberry, grape and apple; each box contains 6 twirls (80 calories each) and costs $3-$5.50 at Wal-Mart, Whole Foods Markets and peapod.com.
Game plans
Two new cookbooks will help fuel sports-lovin’ foodies. “ESPN Gameday Gourmet” (ESPN Books, $16.95), by New Orleans-based chef Pableaux Johnson, offers thorough (and amusingly written) tips on tailgating. Its 80 recipes, many regional, manage to be authentic and doable. Debbie Moose’s “Fan Fare” (Harvard Common Press, $14.95) takes a broader tack, with an emphasis on recipes for sports fans cooking in the parking lot or the kitchen. Both books are at some Barnes & Noble bookstores and amazon.com.
Zap to it
We liked the two new Weight Watchers Smart Ones Anytime Selections: chicken and cheese quesadillas were the favorite but the calzone Italiano earned approval too. These quick-to-zap meals take about 3 minutes to make. Each serving contains fewer than 300 calories and 7 fat grams; a box contains 2 servings and costs $3-$3.40 in the freezer case at Dominick’s, Sunset Foods and peapod.com.
