Taste of Texas
Sure enjoyed your article on Texas barbecue (“Lone Star Embrace,” Sept. 26). I grew up in Gonzales County (Ottine) and have frequented many of the establishments you wrote about. I have shared your video with a lot of the good people in Gonzales. We prefer Luling City Market when we are home but Gonzales City Market comes in a close second. Thanks for making my day.

Local ‘cue worth a try
Many thanks for Bill Daley’s and Donna Pierce’s story (“Savoring barbecue in our own back yard,” Sept. 26). Lots of interesting “thought for food” from some of the gusty city’s great grease men. I could chitchat with Messrs. Adams, Lemon and Sorkin and watch the smoke rise all day, but sooner or later would beg these pork princes to set the table!
One oversight, I strongly recommend your readers give Fat Willy’s barbecue a try. Splendelicious ribs, burgers, brisket and pulled pork. And a made-from-scratch coconut cream cake that our grandmothers would want the recipe for! (2416 W. Schubert Ave., 773-782-1800)

Among the many rib places I have been fortunate to chew my way through, the best in the Chicago area (“Savoring barbecue…,” Sept. 26) has got to be Exsenator’s (3349 W. 159th St., Markham). It is just off the Tri-State in a yellow shack with a metal stovepipe sticking out and is takeout only. I travel a bit and just have to stop there to pick up the great rib tips to eat on the run. You can tell the best places — a smoky smell and no credit cards.
