It wasn’t so long ago that girls basketball teams could circle “Hoffman Estates” on their schedule and mark down a “W.”
How things have changed. Just ask
Megan Fischer
.
“We’ve always had talent on our team; we just haven’t lived up to the expectations,” the 5-foot 11-inch junior said Wednesday, a day after the Hawks handed No. 13 Schaumburg its third loss of the season.
Fischer scored the game-winning basket against the Saxons a few days after her two free throws with 2.7 seconds left had beaten Huntley 50-49.
The Hawks are 17-6. The previous five seasons they were 40-100, including last season’s 8-18 mark.
What’s changed?
Mike Nocella
, who retired last season after a 179-124 record in 12 years with Prospect, came in as a last-minute hire to replace former Notre Dame All-American
Alicia Ratay
as coach.
“He taught us to come together as a team, use everybody’s strongest assets,” Fischer said.
Fellow starters
Megan Evans
,
Alex Wulbecker
,
Carol King
and
Missy Douglas
have “worked coming together,” Fischer added. “Our scoring is more balanced, people have stepped up.”
