KOSOVO DESERTIONS: Dozens of Serb officers have deserted the Kosovo police force since the new state declared independence. About 170 of the force’s 800 Serb officers have either quit or gone absent since the Feb. 17 declaration, police officials said.

WALESA PACEMAKER: Surgeons successfully implanted a pacemaker in former Polish President Lech Walesa, 64, and hope it will keep the Nobel laureate from needing a heart transplant. The device was implanted during a two-hour procedure at Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston.
