The members of Green Sugar hope this is their year.

Freshly transplanted from L.A., guitarist and vocalist Parker Dodson has built up a new lineup for his “stomp rock ‘n’ roll” vision.

“What we’re trying to do in Chicago is bring back the rootsy, bluesy rock ‘n’ roll scene that used to have people going out to see live music all the time,” Dodson said. “Today’s bands seem short on charisma and talent, and so we made sure when we put the band together that we’d never be short on either.”

When Dodson needed new talent after leaving L.A., he turned to high school buddy Jon Patrick Luby.

“We talked on the phone, and I went out there for a weekend and jammed,” Luby said. “We rented a rehearsal space, and he eventually moved back [to Chicago].”

Together with rhythm guitarist Mike Starcev and various bass players, the new Green Sugar is complete. More than that, the band is ready to take its bluesy brand of self-described “stomp rock” on the road.

Luby said Green Sugar has applied to as many as 50 summer festivals and shows.

“We just finished sending out our press kits to all of the festivals this summer — venues like Lollapalooza, Ozzfest,” he said.

So what exactly is “stomp rock”?

“It’s music that makes people want to stomp their feet, shake their booty and have a good time,” Luby said. “We’re all up there [on stage], loving music, having a good time, and loving every minute of it. We just feed off the crowd, rock out and put on a good show.”
