The reviews are in for Literacy Chicago’s third annual Well-Read Ball–well done. More than 300 guests at Galleria Marchetti heard best-selling author and lawyer Scott Turow recall when he discovered the impact of reading: as a youngster in the car with his mother. “The moment when I could read, it was a No Parking sign. It was an extraordinary feeling of independence, competence and power, which is what this organization is all about,” he said. CBS News commentator, actress and the ball’s emcee Nancy Giles kept things lively all evening, even though her steadier gig is on the sleepiest day of the week. Referring to “CBS Sunday Morning,” where she delivers biting commentary, she said, “The show is nice, if you ever miss church [to watch],” Giles said. “God won’t mind.”
