A third trial date has been set in Miami in the case of six men accused of plotting to destroy Chicago’s Sears Tower and several FBI offices. Two trials in the “Liberty City Seven” case have ended in mistrials. One defendant was acquitted. The third trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 6, 2009.
Arrested after 32 years
A woman who escaped from a Detroit prison 32 years ago has been arrested in San Diego, where she was married with three children and living under a false name, authorities said. Susan LeFevre, who had been using the name Marie Walsh, was arrested April 24 by federal marshals at her home.
Americans killed
The killings of five U.S. soldiers in separate attacks Tuesday in Baghdad pushed the American death toll for April up to 49, making it the deadliest month since September, officials said. Iraqi civilian deaths also remain high following a recent crackdown on Shiite militia factions.
Government helps gays
Australia’s new government won praise Wednesday for its plan to eliminate discrimination against gay couples in more than 100 laws, but even those applauding said it should approve same sex marriages. The amendments will be introduced in Parliament next month, but it will take a year to complete the process.
