Estimated amount given by foundations in 2007, which set a record according to the Foundation Center. The total was up from $39 billion in 2006. The center, a research and educational organization, attributed the increase to strong returns on foundation assets and a record $36.6 billion in new gifts to foundations. Those factors will propel further growth in foundation giving this year despite the current economic downturn, said Sara Engelhardt, the center’s president.
