Nightclub lawsuits

Several foam manufacturers have agreed to pay $30 million to settle lawsuits brought by survivors and family members of those who died in a 2003 fire at a nightclub in Providence, R.I.

Passenger cited

A Southwest Airlines passenger who refused to get off his cell phone during a flight found Dallas police waiting for him Monday. Police said Joe David Jones, 50, of Austin, Texas, was cited for disorderly conduct.

Florida wildfires

Dry, windy weather fueled several wildfires on Florida’s central Atlantic coast Monday, driving hundreds of residents from their homes. Helicopters dropped water on a fire that had burned about 800 acres in Daytona Beach by Monday afternoon.

Teen sentenced

Jean Pierre Orlewicz, 18, of Plymouth Township, Mich., convicted of killing a man, then beheading him and setting fire to his body in what prosecutors called a thrill killing was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

The Marine Corps could eventually be more than a year ahead of schedule in its plan to grow the force to 202,000 members.
