Edgar Renteria snapped out of a 4-for-35 funk in a huge way with a 4-for-4 performance with five RBIs, including a three-run triple and a solo home run in the Tigers’ 12-8 win over the Mariners.
Cole Hamels pitched seven dominant innings, scattering four hits and striking out 11 in the Phillies’ 1-0 win over the Nationals. Hamels did not get the decision as the game remained 0-0 until the ninth.

Mike Mussina gave up seven runs on five hits and didn’t survive the first inning in the Yankees’ 12-2 loss to the Orioles. Derek Jeter’s two-out throwing error opened the floodgates, leading to six unearned runs.
Doug Mathis’ first big-league start will be one he forgets. The 24-year-old Rangers righty, making his fourth appearance, was torched by the Twins for nine runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Athletics left fielder Emil Brown made a costly two-out error in the eighth inning in a 3-2 loss to the Rays. Brown badly botched a sliding attempt on Dioner Navarro’s sinking liner, clearing the bases.
