CHINA MEETING: Chinese President Hu Jintao met the head of Taiwan’s ruling party in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, another sign of warming relations. The meeting was the first between the heads of China and Taiwan’s ruling parties in six decades. The two leaders discussed the recent Sichuan earthquake.

GUINEA MUTINY: A mutiny by disgruntled soldiers in Guinea appeared to be easing after government promises to grant them eight years’ back pay. Still, soldiers inside Guinea’s largest military camp said they would keep the army’s second-in-command hostage to pressure their bosses to make good on their promises.

BUYING BABIES? Police in northern Mexico have arrested two people accused of buying Mexican babies to sell to U.S. couples for a profit, investigators said. Amado Torres, 64, of Harlingen, Texas, and his wife, Maria Isabel Hernandez, 25, are suspected of buying more than a dozen children aged 2 or younger.
