Josh Banks took a shutout into the ninth in his second big-league start, throwing a six-hitter in the Padres’ 5-1 win over the Giants. Banks had pitched 162/3 scoreless innings before Aaron Rowand’s RBI single.
Jay Bruce extended his amazing weeklong debut with a 10th-inning homer in the Reds’ 8-7 win over the Braves. Bruce ripped Manny Acosta’s pitch deep into the right-field stands. Bruce is 11-for-19 (.579) since his call-up.
The Royals ended their 12-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Indians. David DeJesus had a solo homer and RBI single to lead the way. During the streak, Kansas City fell 7 1/2 games further out of first place.
THREE DOWN
Dodgers setup man Jonathan Broxton had an eighth-inning meltdown, surrendering a two-run homer to Carlos Beltran and the go-ahead single to Fernando Tatis in a 3-2 loss to the Mets.
The Tigers looked meek against Felix Hernandez and the Mariners in a 5-0 loss. Detroit had just two hits and was blanked for the ninth time. Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco struck out three times each.
Mike Parisi found out starting isn’t the same as coming out of the bullpen. The Cardinals rookie was rocked for eight runs in 2 2/3 innings in a 14-4 loss to the Pirates. He had allowed just five runs in 15 2/3 innings of relief.
