WILDFIRES: Firefighters tapped two lakes in eastern North Carolina on Monday to douse the land around a wildfire that has spread thick smoke for hundreds of miles. The fire was about 60 percent contained. Meanwhile, in Northern California, fire crews controlled blazes about 90 miles north of Sacramento that destroyed or damaged almost 100 homes and knocked out power.

EXPORTER SENTENCED: A businessman was sentenced Monday in Washington to nearly 3 years in prison for conspiring to export sensitive military components to India. Parthasarathy Sudarshan, 47, had admitted to a scheme to conceal the true destination for electronic parts used in missile guidance systems and combat aircraft.

JET FIRE: Flames shot out from a wheel in the landing gear of a Southwest Airlines jet as it landed Monday at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, forcing the runway to be shut down for more than two hours. Firefighters put out the blaze within seconds, Phoenix fire Capt. Victor Rangel said. No one was hurt.
