American sprinter Tyson Gay was eliminated from the 100 meters in Saturday night’s semifinals. He finished fifth in his race with a time of 10.05 seconds, and only the top four advanced to the final.

“Toward the finish line, I didn’t know if I had made the finals or not,” Gay said. “When I looked up and saw I didn’t, it was kind of devastating.”

Still, it wasn’t a surprise.

Gay, coming off a hamstring injury that kept him from racing for six weeks before the Olympics, had struggled through Friday’s first two rounds.

“I’m pretty upset,” Gay said. “I may have needed more races, but I don’t have any excuses. I just didn’t make it.”
