Mask predictions

Halloween suppliers tell The Associated Press that sales of masks of presidential candidates have predicted the winner in the last several elections.

Really! So the process is not exactly scientific, but if history repeats itself, then Barack Obama will be getting plenty of treats this Halloween.

The AP reports the Democrat’s mask was outselling John McCain’s in Spirit Halloween and iParty stores, as well as online at amazon.com and buycostumes.com.

No manhandling the mascot! Sure, hitting the ball is great — if you are a baseball player. But taking a swing is not so good if you are a fan. According to The Associated Press, a New York Mets fan has pleaded guilty to badgering the team’s baseball-headed mascot. The AP says the fan, Christien Hansen, harassed the mascot at a game in May, refused to leave Shea Stadium and took a swing at a security guard. The 32-year-old reportedly spit in the guard’s face and pushed kids out of his way. Hansen was ordered to pay a $500 fine.

Note to self: gas is flammable A Mukwonago, Wis., man was arrested after using a cigarette lighter while he was siphoning gasoline from a van.

The incident blew up (get it?) when the man went to drive home early in the morning after visiting friends and realized his SUV was on empty.

This is when the sparks began to fly. (Har!) As reported by the AP, the man tried stealing gas from a van with help from a woman. He couldn’t see how much gas was in the container and decided it would be a good idea to use a lighter to check.

The blast of fire that followed burned the gas thief’s hands and led nearby residents to call police. The burned bandits were found later in a store parking lot. The man was arrested for theft and negligent use of burning materials.

IS THAT KETCHUP IN YOUR POCKET?

An Orange, Calif., school board trustee known for ranting at meetings is now suspected of condiment kidnapping.

The trustee was cited for petty theft last weekend after stashing a bottle of ketchup under his clothing and leaving a Chapman University cafeteria, according to the AP.

And in case you’re wondering what sort of punishment comes with ketchup theft, the man must appear in court. He also could face 45 days in jail.

The man’s school board tenure will be over next month, but the AP reports he’s running for the Santa Ana City Council.

No mustard was reported missing.

The mile marker along two of New Jersey’s most traveled roads where metal signs keep getting stolen.

Joe Orlando, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, told the AP that they have no idea who is taking the signs.

“Maybe it’s just some kids with a Devil-may-care attitude,” Orlando told the AP.
