The top-of-the-line Mazda6s Grand Touring model has premium-car characteristics, especially in the interior design, materials and execution. It looks as classy inside as many luxury cars. The outside mirrors pose a problem. They are not overly large, but also are set in big pods that block the front-quarter vision for shorter drivers.

The Mazda 6i Sport with the 2.5-liter, 170-h.p. 4 and 5-speed automatic is powerful enough to enter local freeways with authority. It handles quite well on twists and turns.And at the end of the day, I could smile at a fuel gauge that showed I had consumed barely a quarter of a tank of the recommended unleaded gasoline.

In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s frontal-offset crash test, the Mazda6 was rated Good overall — the highest score possible. It remains to be seen is whether Mazda has improved its reliability, which has had some trouble spots in Consumer Reports.

Mazda hopes its redesigned 6 sedan will appeal to more 35- to 55-year-olds. Most buyers of midsize sedans such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu are in that age category.

The 2009 Mazda6 styling is a bit polarizing, with a snarky snout, oddly large fender flares and enormous dual exhausts. The test car also has push-button starting, but the excised keyhole was covered with a piece of plastic that appeared to have been slapped on.
