The St. Petersburg Times broke the news of Jeff Garcia no longer being in Tampa Bay’s plans. The veteran quarterback, who turns 39 on Feb. 24, becomes a free agent three days after his birthday.

Maybe the Bears should throw him a party in Chicago.

Jerry Angelo implied he would add veteran help at quarterback, although Kyle Orton is slated to be the starter. Since Chris Simms wants to remain with the Titans, why not take a chance on another ex-Buccaneer?

The problem is Garcia likely wants to be a starter, and the Bears couldn’t promise him that opportunity with Orton around.

By the way, running back Fred Taylor’s release from Jacksonville is worth monitoring. The Bears need a complement to Matt Forte.
