Goose Island StoutFest at Goose Island Clybourn 1800 N. Clybourn Ave., 312-915-0071; gooseisland.com

Check it out if you … want a real appreciation of Chicago’s local brewing talent, would like to learn about beer by asking brewers directly, are curious about craft brews but don’t want to get stuck paying for drinks you don’t like.

The deets: From 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, $30 will get you samples of more than 30 stouts from 20 local craft brewers including Piece, Three Floyds, Two Brothers and New Holland Brewing Company. Admission to the 12th annual celebration gives you 30 tickets, which each are good for a taste from your souvenir glass. Brewers will be on hand to discuss the process for making each beer and how oats, coffee, rye and other special ingredients are used to create unique tastes. Reservations are required, and the event benefits the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild.

The payoff: Sipping your way through a huge field of hops.
