Former Penn State offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger couldn’t help but notice the punch clock in Lovie Smith’s office during a predraft visit to Halas Hall.
As Smith explained to Ohrnberger, the clock represented the type of approach the Bears take to work daily.
“Coach Smith said he wanted a blue-collar-type offensive lineman who is ready to make the commitment to bringing his lunch pail to work and getting after it,” Ohrnberger said. “I feel like I’m that type of player.”
The Bears just might find some blue-collar talent in the late rounds Sunday during Day 2 of the NFL draft, players capable of contributing as backups or special-teamers.
But the Bears need to focus on getting quality talent with their four picks in the third and fourth rounds after trading their second-round pick to Seattle. That 49th overall selection went to the Seahawks for their third- and fourth-round picks, leaving the Bears without a player from Day 1.
Here is a look at Angelo’s history in the third and lower rounds with a breakdown of some possibilities for the Bears on Sunday:
Third round
Angelo’s past hits: LB Lance Briggs (four-time Pro Bowler), WR Bernard Berrian (Minnesota Vikings), DT Marcus Harrison (backup)
Past misses: LB Roosevelt Williams (out of football), OG Terrence Metcalf (free agent), LB Michael Okwo (Indianapolis Colts).
Jury’s still out: WR Earl Bennett, RB Garrett Wolfe, DT Dusty Dvoracek
With the 68th (from Seattle) and 99th (from Minnesota) picks … The Bears still need a receiver, and Florida’s Louis Murphy and Oklahoma’s Juaquin Iglesias are still available. The Bears still have holes in the secondary, so going after a safety such as Clemson’s Chris Clemons wouldn’t be a stretch. Top defensive back target Sherrod Martin from Troy is off the board.
Fourth round
Angelo’s past hits: DE Alex Brown (starter), QB Kyle Orton (2008 starter), G Josh Beekman (2008 starter)
Past misses: LB Leon Joe (Detroit), FS Todd Johnson (St. Louis), DT Ian Scott (San Diego)
Jury’s still out: CB Nathan Vasher, LB Jamar Williams, S Craig Steltz
With the 105th and 119th picks … If receiver remains a position of need, Virginia’s Kevin Ogletree would be a good fit. Ogletree tore his ACL during his sophomore season but returned to have a productive junior year. The Bears also might look at Notre Dame free safety David Bruton, though he has his critics.
Fifth round
Angelo’s past hits: WR Bobby Wade (Minnesota), WR Justin Gage (Tennessee), SS Kevin Payne (starter).
Past misses: WR Airese Curry (Hamilton Tiger-Cats), DT Tron LaFavor (out of football), DE Claude Harriott (Toronto Argonauts), QB Craig Krenzel (Ohio State radio commentator).
Jury’s still out: DE Mark Anderson, CB Corey Graham, DB Zackary Bowman, TE Kellen Davis.
With the 140th and 154th picks … The Bears could find offensive line depth in tackles Robert Brewster of Ball State and Joel Bell of Furman. Clemson running back James Davis is projected in this round and has said he received a lot of attention from the Bears.
Sixth round
Angelo’s past hits: S Chris Harris (Carolina), RB Adrian Peterson.
Past misses: WR Jamin Elliott (AFL), LB Joe Odom (out of football), FB J.D. Runnels (Cincinnati).
Jury is still out: OG Tyler Reed.
With the 190th pick … North Carolina receiver Brandon Tate is coming off a serious knee injury and might not be able to contribute until 2010. But he might be worth the risk this late. Texas defensive end Henry Melton is another prospect the Bears like, but this might be too late to find a solid contributor at a position of need.
Seventh round
Angelo’s past hits: CB Trumaine McBride, LB Joey LaRocque.
Past misses: OG Bryan Anderson (out of football), WR Marcus Monk (out of football), OT Aaron Brant (free agent).
Jury is still out: DE Ervin Baldwin.
With the 246th and 251st picks … The Bears are looking for special-teams contributors at this point, and linebackers Stephen Hodge of TCU and Russell Allen of San Diego State would fit. Finding another versatile offensive lineman wouldn’t hurt, and Penn State’s Ohrnberger would be willing to do some dirty work.
