*TENNIS: Maria Sharapova routed Darya Kustova 6-2, 6-0 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Warsaw Open in her first singles tournament since returning from shoulder surgery. The three-time Grand Slam title winner needed only 57 minutes to down Kustova. … The United States has been eliminated from World Team Cup tennis in Germany after failing to advance out of round-robin play. Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey defeated Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt and Robin Soderling 2-6, 6-2, 10-3, but the United States couldn’t overcome losing two singles matches on Tuesday. Sweden will play host to Germany for a place in Saturday’s final.

*SOCCER: Jadson scored from about 12 yards in the seventh minute of overtime, and Shakhtar Donetsk of the Ukraine beat Germany’s Werder Bremen 2-1 Wednesday night to win the final UEFA Cup. The tournament, Europe’s No. 2 club competition behind the Champions League, is being renamed the Europa League for next season. … New York Red Bulls midfielder Jorge Rojas has been fined $1,000 and suspended two games by the MLS. Rojas failed to leave the field in a timely and orderly manner after being issued a red card in the Red Bulls’ game May 16.

*CYCLING: Mark Cavendish won the 11th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday, Danilo Di Luca retained the overall leader’s pink jersey and Lance Armstrong moved up two spots to 16th overall. Cavendish, the British standout of Team Columbia-High Road, clocked 4 hours, 51 minutes, 17 seconds over the mostly flat 133-mile leg from Turin to Arenzano. Tyler Farrar of the United States was second and Alessandro Petacchi of Italy was third, both with the same time as Cavendish in the mass sprint finish.

*COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Tennessee will self-report another minor recruiting violation after a comment about a recruit was posted to coach Lane Kiffin’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Kiffin’s profiles on the two social media Web sites Tuesday briefly read: “I was so excited to hear that J.C. Copeland committed to play for the Vols today!” Copeland is a junior at Troup County High School in LaGrange, Ga. … Kansas State has filed a lawsuit challenging a secret deal between former athletic director Ron Krause and former football coach Ron Prince that would pay Prince $3.2 million in deferred compensation between 2015 and 2020.

*COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has been selected for the Army Sports Hall of Fame. A 1969 West Point graduate, Krzyzewski earned three letters as a player for Army and then coached the Black Knights for five years. He finished with a 73-59 record before taking over at Duke in 1978.
