We’re keeping an eye on Jay Cutler during his first Bears camp.
Easy going: Cutler’s arm got a break Thursday as the Bears went through a glorified walk-through, doing mainly situational work.
He faced the non-starters in 7-on-7 and full-team drills and threw short passes.
The receivers jogged after making catches, with little resistance from the defense.
Cutler still had the cut on his left, non-throwing hand taped, but that shouldn’t affect his play Saturday.
Man down? The Cutler-Greg Olsen connection has been the talk of camp. But Olsen sat out Thursday’s practice while dealing with a hip strain. It shouldn’t keep the one-two punch from connecting in Saturday night’s exhibition in Buffalo. “Everyone’s excited for it,” Olsen said of the game. “Gives everyone a chance to finally play against someone other than our own guys. I think it’s going to go well for us.”
Center of attention: Center Olin Kreutz, the team leader in the locker room, said the transition to working with Cutler has been extremely smooth. “There’s no real adjustment. Whenever you work with a guy who plays the position at that level, it’s a seamless transition. He makes the game easier for everybody.”
Snap to it: Whereas fumbled snaps seemed to be a regular occurrence during the Rex Grossman Era, there has yet to be a bad exchange between Cutler and Kreutz. “There’s always going to be some of those, no matter how long you’ve played,” Kreutz said. “But Jay does everything well — and that includes taking a snap.”
