Jake Peavy might need more than one more minor league rehabilitation start, based on his comments after he was tagged for four runs in four innings Tuesday night in Triple-A Charlotte’s 5-2 loss at Durham.

“I’m a long way from where I’m used to being,” Peavy told reporters after his second rehab start after missing nearly two months because of a right ankle injury. “Think about it from where I am, my body feels like it’s January. As the game went along, I tried to put some more effort and intensity into it. I just wasn’t able to get the command and velocity.

“I threw everything I had. I just didn’t have command of the breaking ball at all.”

Peavy allowed three consecutive two-out hits in the first inning, capped by Chris Richard’s two-run single. Peavy gave up a home run to Joe Dillon to start the fourth.

Peavy struck out five, walked none, hit one batter and his fastball was clocked consistently at 91 m.p.h. Peavy threw 44 of 67 pitches for strikes.

“Bottom line, I have to do the best thing for me and the organization. I want to make a wise decision. As badly as I want to be on a big league field helping the team win, you have to understand where you are physically.

“Right now I don’t believe I could take the field and throw seven [innings].”

Peavy is scheduled to start Sunday for Charlotte in Gwinnett, Ga.
