Peavy start in doubt
BOSTON
Pitching coach Don Cooper acknowledged that it might be a few days before deciding whether Jake Peavy will start for the White Sox on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
“My comment to [Peavy] was, ‘Hopefully you getting hit in the elbow won’t get in the way of your next start,’ ” Cooper said Tuesday before the Sox took batting practice. “Where that is? I don’t want him to miss his next start. But we’ll see how it goes.”

GM defends Sweet Lou
Before Tuesday’s game, Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry defended Lou Piniella’s decision to play his veterans down the stretch. “I think Lou should write the lineup how he thinks gives us the best chance to win that day,” Hendry said. “That’s what he does well for a long time. I’ve got a lot of faith in him and he’s had a history of good runs at the end of his career, managing-wise, not only here the last couple years, but before that.”

– Plaxico Burress says he plans to return to the NFL after serving a two-year prison sentence on a weapons charge. In an ESPN interview Tuesday night, he also revealed his wife is expecting a baby.
