Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis (above) holds a news conference Thursday outside WLS-Ch. 7 studios in the Loop, where a Chicago police officer fatally shot a man who was threatening an elderly man with a knife to his throat. The officer also shot another officer who responded to the scene, but he escaped serious injury when the bullet hit his protective vest. The lunchtime shooting near one of the city’s busiest corners left many people visibly shaken. Weis defended the shooting: “[The suspect] was trying to murder an innocent elderly gentleman. With that escalation of force, our officers were forced to engage him, and we used deadly force.” Page 6
