A lion is lost
How deeply was the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy felt in Washington this week? Consider that all of the living former presidents but George H.W. Bush are expected to attend a funeral Mass for Kennedy on Saturday in Boston. Kennedy spent nearly 50 years in the Senate, serving alongside 10 presidents — including his brother John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Here is a sampling of the praise politicians from both sides of the political aisle heaped on the “liberal lion.” REDEYE, TRIBUNE, AP CONTRIBUTED.
“While we didn’t see eye to eye on many political issues through the years, I always respected his steadfast public service.”
— Former President George H.W. Bush
“The liberal lion’s mighty roar may now fall silent, but his dream shall never die. … It was the thrill of my lifetime to work with Ted Kennedy.”
— Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
“You couldn’t help but like him, but on the other hand, the fights were real and they were knockdown, drag-out battles. But that’s the way it should be”
— Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah)
“His ties go back, with his father and my father, back many, many years here in Chicago. … I knew Teddy very personally over many years.”
— Mayor Daley
