Denis

Savard

grew up in Canada, spent most of his playing career with the Blackhawks and won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens.

So the Hall of Famer’s allegiance had to be tested when the U.S. defeated Canada Sunday night in the Winter Olympics?

“Well, obviously, I would like to see both of them in the finals,” said Savard, also a former Blackhawks coach. “But saying that … the Russians are a pretty good team. The Czechs are good; and the Swedes are good. I think the U.S. has a better way to get there now.”

Savard said his satellite dish went out after the first period of Sunday night’s game, and he relied on updates from friends the remainder of the contest.

Overheard:

After being introduced by

Richard Dent, Steve McMichael

captivated a Halas Hall audience at Monday night’s National Football Foundation Awards. McMichael, who will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this summer, said this about the turning point in his freshman year at Texas, where he began as a tight end:

“Our (starting) defensive end got hurt. So they moved me back to defense and I started that next game against Texas Tech … that was the night my father was killed. That’s when that university became my patriarch.”
