Timely hitting and a strong performance from its ace Wednesday helped Mount Carmel to an 8-2 Catholic League victory against Loyola.

Caravan junior pitcher John Kravetz, an Illinois recruit, gave up two runs and three hits and struck out three in the complete game.

“I felt good all day and I thought I fell into a pretty good rhythm,” Kravetz said. “I kept getting ground balls and the guys behind me kept making some big plays at key times to get me out of the inning.”

Mount Carmel’s Brad Myjak hit a two-run home run (4th of season) in the fifth inning to give the Caravan a 4-1 lead over Loyola (4-4, 1-1).

“We know if we can score some runs early and give John a lead we’re in good shape,” Myjak said. “I was surprised I saw something so good, but I knew I hit it pretty hard. It’s a great feeling.”

The Caravan (10-3, 2-0) scored four times in the sixth — led by Jeff Boehm’s bases-loaded double — to increase their lead to 8-2 lead.

“It feels great to go seven strong and get the win. It feels like an honest day’s work,” Kravetz (3-1) said. “It’s a big conference win and it’s something to build on.”

“We’re getting better,” Myjak added. “I think we’re starting to come out and not only know what’s needed, but finding a way to get it done.”
