Ron Santo
has survived the ravages of diabetes — including the loss of parts of both legs — heart ailments, cancer and the burden of watching yet another disappointing Cubs season.
But the 70-year-old embodiment of perseverance has no immediate plans to walk away from the WGN Radio broadcast booth. The Cubs have planned a week of tributes to Santo, beginning with Monday night’s game against the Pirates at Wrigley Field.
“The traveling … that is what really screws up my insulin and my blood sugar,” Santo told us Sunday. “So I am going to try to stay away from some difficult road trips. It’s hard for me because of the fact I am a nervous wreck at home watching the games.”
