During the White Sox’s hot streak, Jake Peavy compiled a 3-1 record and 1.55 earned-run average, his only loss coming against Royals Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke.
And now Daniel Hudson will take Peavy’s place, facing Greinke Sunday in the last game before the three-day All-Star break.
“He’s not coming here to save us. He’s not going to come here to be Jake Peavy,” manager Ozzie Guillen said Saturday. “He’s not going to come here to say, ‘Well, I have to do this to stay.’ He has to go out there to be Hudson, be the way he is, throw the ball at the plate.
“He’s been here before. I don’t see him walking in here like, ‘Wow, oh my gosh, this is the big leagues.’ He’s been here before and we treated him very well. We will continue to treat him very well.
“Last year I was not afraid to pitch this kid at the big league level because I think he has good enough stuff.”
While some believe the Sox should make a trade for a proven pitcher, Guillen is among those wanting to give the 23-year-old Hudson a chance, given his 1-1 record last September with the Sox and his 11-4 record at Triple-A Charlotte this year.
“Can this guy help us? Yes,” Guillen said. “I’d rather stay in the organization than go out and make a move to rent a player for no reason. If we’re in the pennant race and it’s something we need, believe me, Kenny (Williams) will do it. Meanwhile, we’re not going to do anything because we’re desperate or because we have to please people.”
