Pekin police said today they were trying to determine why a homeless man from Chicago broke into nine homes to steal small change in a weeklong burglary spree.

James Batterson, 42, was arrested Sunday on an outstanding Illinois Department of Corrections warrant for escape, resisting a police officer and possession of cannabis, Pekin Police Officer Mike Sanders said.

Sanders said that police believe that during his alleged crime spree, Batterson mainly targeted loose change in the homes he broke into.
