Three women were killed early Friday in a fiery car crash in the 3000 block of West 47th Street, police said.

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo in which they were riding was traveling west at a high speed when the driver lost control and the vehicle hit a light pole, bursting into flames, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

Officials at the Cook County medical examiner’s office said the three victims were women, but officials will need dental records to identify them.

The Monte Carlo was registered to a 20-year-old woman in Lawndale, according to records. Neighbors said she and two friends were seen leaving her home late Thursday to celebrate the birthday of one of the women, who also lives in Lawndale and, according to records, turned 24 on Friday. Neighbors said the women have not been seen since they left Thursday night.

While witnesses initially told police that the car may have been chased, the investigation revealed that only the crashed vehicle was involved, O’Brien said.
