McHenry County leads Illinois for reports of rabid bats, with 17 reported so far in 2010.

That matches the number in McHenry County for the entire year in 2009. And county health department officials said the number could increase because bats are more active during mating season, which runs July through September.

“I’m very confident we will have more bats tested,” said McHenry County Health Department spokeswoman Debra Quackenbush.
