The former treasurer for the Downers Grove Panthers youth football club, accused of embezzling more than $100,000, will serve a six-month jail sentence and must pay back $88,000 under a deal negotiated with prosecutors.
Theresa A. Carlquist, of the 6700 block of Plymouth Road in Downers Grove, pleaded guilty today in DuPage County Court .
Panthers Jr. Football President Mike Lowery said the organization was “pleased” with the outcome. “It didn’t go unpunished and we’re getting back a very large sum of money … The jail time is the court’s decision.
“She’s a mom and has two kids. She was with our program a very long time,” he said.
Carlquist, 52, was the only person handling the league’s finances when $112,000 disappeared between February 2008 and December 2009, according to Downers Grove police. Carlquist wrote herself checks for as much as $8,500 from the football league’s checking account, police said. Once Panther officials discovered the money missing, Carlquist was immediately removed from the treasurer position.
