As usual, the Notre Dame basketball team will be led by the guys who have been around college basketball the longest.
Tim Abromaitis and Scott Martin, both fifth-year players, will serve as captains for the Irish in the 2011-12 season, the school announced Thursday.
Abromaitis, the team’s leading returning scorer after averaging 15.4 points per game last year, is the 19th two-year captain in program history. Martin started all 33 games last year and averaged 9.7 points.
“I’m excited that we have these two guys leading our group this season,” Irish coach Mike Brey said in a statement. “They are going to be great voices in our locker room for the younger players and will help us early on in the season as we look to create our identity. They’re two guys who have a tremendous work ethic and great understanding of our basketball program and what it takes for us to be successful.”
Notre Dame opens up the regular season Nov. 12 against Mississippi Valley State.
