Former Northern Illinois star wide receiver P.J. Fleck has returned to his alma mater as the Huskies’ offensive coordinator, the school announced Thursday.

Fleck, who spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Rutgers, previously served as an assistant at NIU from 2007-2009. Fleck fills the void left when Matt Canada departed NIU to become the offensive coordinator at Wisconsin two weeks ago.

Fleck starred for the Huskies in 2003, catching 77 passes for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns. He spent two seasons with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

Also added to the Huskies staff of head coach Dave Doeren is Mike Uremovich, who will work with the running backs and serve as special teams coordinator. Uremovich also has previous ties to NIU, having begun his coaching career as a graduate assistant on Joe Novak’s staff in 2001 and 2002.

Uremovich spent the last seven years as head coach at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.
