A prisoner was wounded this morning in an officer-involved shooting after an attempted escape from an Elgin police squad car on Illinois 53 in Rolling Meadows, officials said.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 a.m. on Ill. Hwy. 53 at Algonquin Road near an exit ramp, said Elgin Police Com. Glenn Theriault.

An officer who was on bond-call duty was transporting the individual when the prisoner tried to escape, Theriault said. It’s not clear where the person was being taken.

Details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately available, but Theriault said the prisoner was shot. He would not give the gender for the prisoner.

The individual was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but the person’s condition was not available, he said.

The officer was also injured and taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released. The nature of the officer’s injuries was not available, but Theriault said he was not shot.

At 11 a.m., it was not clear why the prisoner was being held, but officials thought the arrest may have been warrant related.

The Illinois State Police were leading the investigation, Theriault said.
