A 34-year-old pregnant woman died today and two others were injured after the Jeep they were in this afternoon rolled over and crashed on the Indiana Toll Road in Gary, police said.
The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. today when Leslie D. Thompson was driving a 1992 Jeep westbound on the toll road in the far right lane. At mile marker 11.9, about one mile west of the Grant Street exit, the woman began to change lanes to go into the middle lane, according to a press release issued by the Indiana State police.
But as Thompson was turning into the middle lane, another westbound car which was in the far left lane, also began to enter the middle lane, police said. To avoid the collision, Thompson apparently jerked her Jeep to the right but lost control, police said.
The woman’s Jeep rolled over multiple times but never made contact with another vehicle, police said.
A 43-year-old Gary man who was a passenger in the Jeep suffered a laceration to his head and had broken ribs and a 33-year-old Gary man who was also a passenger sustained lacerations, police said.
Thompson, of Gary, was wearing a seat belt but police said that the severity of the crash caused her to sustain multiple blunt force trauma.
Police said she tested positive for alcohol and had been in her first trimester of pregnancy.
