White Sox firsts from Robin Ventura’s first day as manager at U. S. Cellular Field:
Ventura media meeting:
It came at about 11:10 a.m. and last about seven minutes, less than half of general manager Ken Williams’ session minutes later.
Ventura official venture onto field:
It didn’t take long. He strolled out in the top of the first inning to talk briefly with umpires who were having the batter’s box redrawn.
Ventura argument:
In the sixth he came out to argue a ball called foul at home plate. It wasn’t vehement but it was long. He lost.
Adam Dunn strikeout:
It came in his first at-bat and drew groans, but not boos, from crowd.
White Sox hit:
Alex Rios doubled with two outs in the second inning but was left stranded.
Opponent hit:
It didn’t come until the fourth off Jake Peavy — Brennan Boesch’s line single.
Opponent caught stealing:
Yes, it really happened. A.J. Pierzynski threw out Delmon Young easily in the fifth. Last year he threw out only 24 of 118 would-be thieves.
Run:
That came in the fifth on the first homer as well, from Dayan Viciedo.
Walk:
That didn’t come until Alejandro De Aza took a base on balls in the sixth.
Sacrifice bunt:
That came from Brent Morel right after De Aza’s walk. It turned into a run when Paul Konerko singled.
Scary decision:
Third base coach Joe McEwing waved Konerko from first to home on Pierzynski’s triple. Konerko survived the trip.
Ventura mound visit:
In the seventh inning after the Tigers pulled within a run, as he removed Peavy.
Boos:
For Dunn, after he struck out a fourth time in the eighth inning.
Save:
Hector Santiago made it for a scoreless ninth inning.
