RHP Joe Wieland, who walked fewer than two batters per nine innings in the minors last season, walked the first batter Thursday. That hitter, Juan Pierre, came around to score. That was the only run Wieland allowed Philadelphia in six innings of a 2-0 loss. “I don’t walk the first guy in a game very often,” said Wieland. “To be honest, walking hitters is something I don’t usually do a lot. There’s no excuse for walking Pierre. No excuse at all.”

LF Carlos Quentin took live batting practice Thursday and could be less than two weeks away from joining the Padres. He had arthroscopic surgery to remove particles and repair the meniscus in his right knee on March 19.

3B Chase Headley had one of the Padres’ four hits Thursday plus two walks. He has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games (14-for-37) and leads the National League with 14 walks.

OF Will Venable went 1-for-4 Thursday and has hit in every game he has started. He is 11-for-34 in those nine starts. Venable also made his third error of the season. He committed only two errors in 109 games last season.
