MLB Team Report – Kansas City Royals – INSIDE PITCH
Nate Adcock threw 58 pitches and three innings Monday night. Luis Mendoza threw 77 pitches and 4 2/3 innings Sunday.
That left the Royals’ two long relievers unavailable for Tuesday night’s game against the Red Sox. The due had been called into extended duty because the starters, Jonathan Sanchez and Luke Hochevar, had lasted a total of 5 1/3 innings.
Wanting another arm for the long role, the Royals called up Vin Mazzaro from Class AAA Omaha, where he was 1-0 with a 4.37 ERA in six starts. Mazzaro, however, reported to the bullpen.
While Danny Duffy lasted just 4 1/3 innings Tuesday, manager Ned Yost used three other relievers instead of Mazzaro as the Royals came from behind to beat Boston 6-4.
With the Royals rotation having difficulty going deep into games, the club is obligated to carry three long relievers.
“It’s not a situation you want to be in for sure,” Yost said. “But our focus is working every day to get this straightened out. We’ll continue that.”
Yost pointed out that Mazzaro was scheduled to start Tuesday for Omaha.
“We have to have protection tonight,” Yost said. “You can keep your fingers crossed and hope that nothing happens because generally it doesn’t, but you still have to have that protection.”
Any chance Mazzaro would move into the rotation, replacing one of the struggling starters?
“Not today,” Yost said. “I’ve got to get through today. Once we get through today, We’ll worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.”
