RHP Jake Arrieta allowed just one run on six hits and a walk in seven innings Friday. Arrieta struck out nine and threw 103 pitches — 66 of them for strikes. It was a much-needed quality start for Arrieta, who lasted just 3.2 innings his last time out.
OF Lew Ford signed a minor league contract with the Orioles Friday and was in the lineup for Class AAA Norfolk Friday night. Ford, 35, hasn’t played in the majors since 2007 with Minnesota. He was batting .333 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 19 games with independent Atlantic City.

CF Adam Jones extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-5 game on Friday. His base hit in the first scored a run. Jones is 14-for-41 with five homers, a double and 10 RBIs in that stretch
RHP Jim Johnson was unavailable Friday after posting saves in three straight games. RHP Pedro Strop closed out Friday’s win, earning his third save. He’s thrown 13 shutout innings over his last 11 outings.
C Matt Wieters is one of the players who may be showing some ill effects from all the extra innings behind the plate. Wieters went 0-for-5 Friday to extend his cold spell.

RHP Brad Bergesen was outrighted to Class AAA Norfolk after passing through waivers. Bergesen, who has been with Norfolk all season, was designated for assignment on May 12 when INF Bill Hall was added to the 40-man roster.
