ROME — Rafael Nadal took down David Ferrer in Saturday’s semifinals at the $3.145 million Italian Open, defeating his fellow Spaniard Ferrer 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 in just over two hours.
The 20-time Masters titlist Nadal has won five of the last seven Italian Open titles, including two straight before losing to Novak Djokovic last year. Nadal improved to 35-2 lifetime at this event with Saturday’s victory.
Nadal holds a 48-21 mark in career title matches.
He improved to 15-4 lifetime against Ferrer, including a victory in a final in Barcelona last month and a victory in the Italian Open finale two years ago.
“Best thing possible after a fantastic time in Barcelona and Montecarlo, to keep playing in clay tournament and then in the final without losing a set is something fantastic and I am happy,” Nadal said. “To play and win 2 tournaments and play it the final of this tournament. Tomorrow is difficult and important match and an important match.”
Nadal will play either world No. 1 Djokovic or Swiss icon Roger Federer in Sunday’s final.
The 2012 Rome champ will earn $595,000.
