Multiple area departments battled a blaze that caused major damage to a thrift shop in East Dundee today.

The fire was largely contained by about 1 p.m. at Community Thrift Store, 900 E. Main Street, but firefighters remained on the scene dealing with hot spots and investigation.

The store had been immediately evacuated earlier after someone reported an odor of smoke, said store manager Jackie Catrette. She was unaware of any injuries and didn’t know how the fire started.

An employee at the Dunkin’ Donuts, across the street, said he saw flames and that the fire appeared to have started inside and moved outside through the roof.

After extinguishing the main fire, firefighters working in the extreme heat continued to open holes in the roof and sprayed water to put out persistent small fires.
