South Alabama 37, Florida Atlantic 34 (2 OT): The Jaguars blocked three field goals – including a potential game-winner at the end of regulation and one in overtime – and Michel Chapuseaux made a 35-yard field goal in the second overtime as South Alabama rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the visiting Owls.
The Jaguars (2-5, 1-2 Sun Belt) scored two touchdowns in the final 5:45 of regulation to tie it 31-31, with Gabe Loper making a one-handed grab on a 16-yard fade pattern from Ross Metheny for the tying score.
The Owls (1-6, 0-4) had an opportunity to win it in regulation, but Loper blocked Mitch Anderson’s 32-yard field goal attempt to force overtime.
The teams traded field goals in the first overtime, but Demetre Baker blocked Anderson’s 44-yard try in the second extra frame. Needing a field goal to win, the Jaguars set up Chapuseaux’s 35-yarder for their first win over an FBS opponent.
Florida Atlantic received career-best yardage performances from quarterback Graham Wilbert (303 passing) and William Dukes (119 receiving). The 34 points also marked the most the Owls have scored since a 38-35 victory over UAB on Nov. 26, 2011.
