No. 21 Notre Dame 84, Monmouth 57: Garrick Sherman came off the bench to score 22 points and the host Irish took control midway through the first half to beat the Hawks.
Sherman, a transfer from Michigan State, made his first seven shots and had nine rebounds. He was 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line. Jack Cooley scored 16 points and Pat Connaughton added 13 for the Irish (2-0), which shot 53.4 percent from the field.
Dion Nesmeth was the only player for Monmouth to reach double figures with 13 points. The Hawks (1-1) shot 38.9 percent and committed 19 turnovers.
Monmouth scored the first two baskets, but Notre Dame soon took control. Cameron Biedscheid’s three-point play with 13:11 remaining broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Irish a lead it would never relinquish. Notre Dame’s largest lead in the first half was 35-18.
Monmouth was called for 23 fouls. Ed Waite was assessed a flagrant one foul when he knocked Scott Martin to the floor in the first half. Hawks’ coach King Rice was hit with a technical foul in the second half.
