Towson 69, Kennesaw State 63: Jerrelle Benimon had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the visiting Tigers led from start to finish at the Comfort Suites Invitational in Richmond, Ky.
Benimon, a 6-8 junior forward who sat out last season after transferring from Georgetown, also led Towson (2-2) with five assists and three blocks. Jerome Hairston, a freshman guard, scored 15 points and junior wing Rafriel Guthrie had 12 off the bench.
Kennesaw State (1-4) was led by senior guard Markeith Cummings, who scored 13 points. Aaron Anderson and Nigel Pruitt were the only other Owls in double figures, scoring 10 apiece.
Towson scored the game’s first five points and took its biggest lead of the game, 36-21, on Guthrie’s 3-pointer with six seconds left in the first half. The Owls climbed back as close as four points with 11:40 remaining but a 13-6 run stemmed the tide.
Mike Burwell, who shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range and scored 11 points, made 3-pointers to bookend the 13-6 run.
